WILL THEY DO IT?

 This post is going to be a sort of follow up to the last post. The war in Ukraine has been ongoing nonstop (no ceasefires) at a fierce intensity for over 4 years. With that being said, the last few months have witnessed an increase in the scope of the war. 


Throughout the war, there has been a nearly constant fear that Russia will decide to utilize nuclear weapons. It is important to note that despite the fear, the overall risk of using such weapons has remained low (primarily because doing so would be viewed globally as an unacceptable escalation). Despite this, the war has reached a point where many analysts (including sources in Russia not given to propaganda) have expressed genuine concern that Putin might decide to take such a step in the very near future.


The reason for the increase in concern is Ukraine is winning (and dictators cannot lose). What I mean is, Putin is a dictator, and he cannot lose to Ukraine. The logic being, if Putin feels like he will lose to Ukraine he will likely to something crazy (like using a nuclear weapon) to as an attempt to change the equation.


Regardless of whether Russia is about to attack NATO, or conduct a nuclear strike, it is becoming clear that Russia is about to do "something" that is very dangerous.

REASON FOR THIS BLOG

When I was a kid knowledge of two events shaped my interest in global events. The first event that I learned about was 9/11 and I first heard about it in 2009, The second event that shaped my interest and the first thing I tracked as it was happening was the Arab spring in 2011. Ever since I learned about 9/11, I have always paid increasing attention to big stories around the world and at home but have always been annoyed with media outlets selecting which stories to cover instead on simply covering events as they happen. I am starting this blog to cover events in a straightforward way as they occur and to give my insight to those events. When necessary, I will add historical examples that help form my opinion. In a world that seems to be on fire people need reporting and insight without an agenda.

WHO WAS RIGHT? DANGEROUS SITUATION

 I closed the last post by asking what if anything people thought would happen between the United States and Iran by time I write this post. I also asked if something did happen, which side would be responsible for it?. If you said that something would happen, and it would be the United States (I am not saying the U.S was wrong to do it) you you are right. Yesterday an Iranian cargo ship broke through the U.S. blockade and after ignoring orders to stop, had its engine room hit by rounds fired by the USS Spruance. The other development I wanted to address is, today the U.S. Embassy in Iraq warned U.S. citizens already in the country to leave immediately. It also urged U.S. citizens not to travel to Iraq. The reason for the  concern is terrorist groups in the country are said to be aiming to assault Americans. The situation is so unstable the Embassy has cautioned U.S. citizens that want to leave Iraq not to go to the Embassy in Baghdad, or the Consulate in Erbil.
