YOUTH DAY
In this post I will give an update on the post from yesterday, and describe what is being planned in Caracas on Thursday (which I briefly referenced in the post yesterday). I will also talk about the background of the date which suggests what happens Thursday could serve as a significant point in the developing situation in Venezuela.
First, I will start with an update from the post yesterday regarding the events involving Juan Pablo Guanipa. Today he was rereleased from jail and put under house arrest, although his relatives claim that they still have not seen any evidence that Guanipa is even still alive.
Which leads us to what is being planned Thursday in Caraccas, the capitol city of Venezuela. In Venezuela Thursday is Youth Day, which is a national holiday to honor the bravery of youth who were killed fighting in the Battle of La Victoria.in 1814. The battle is remembered as a pivotal moment in Venezuela's struggle for independence. The reason for the holiday is important to remember as I mention the plans for Youth Day this year.
On Thursday (Youth Day) Protests am being planned to call for the release of all political prisoners in Venezuela, many of whom are youth who were arrested during past protests. The protests are being organized by the FCU-UCV (the Federation of University Centers of the Central University of Venezuela). It is unknown how big of a turnout the protests will involve but based on similar protests last week, it is safe to expect numbers in the thousands. Violence during Youth Day protests is not unprecedented. In 2014 a protest against the regime devolved into clashes which resulted in the deaths of 3 protesters (2 of them students) and injured 66.
Ironically one of the two people that the regime blamed for the protests, was Maria Corina Machado who is the current leader of the opposition.
